New Crop Organic Peru Norte

Today 8 bags of coffee from Peru came in. (Thats 16 half bags for you math types / Birmingham news readers). The coffee is from a coop in the northeastern corner of Peru, Cepicafe. The site has some really nice pictures and information, but doesn’t work in Safari.

They are everything Primavera looks for in a producer. The “typica” they talk about in the bio is usually the highest regarded sub-species of Coffea arabica among coffee buyers. It is also the Latin American descendant of original coffee tree brought from Europe.

From the Cepicafe Bio:

We produce only washed coffee of the “typica” variety, which is shade-grown under banana plants and other fruit and forestry trees, and thus valued for its quality and its environmentally friendly process.

Conscious that we have to maintain the unique characteristics of our coffee growing zones; CEPICAFE promotes the conservation of the “typica” variety and the ecological coffee production in an agro-forestry system. The small property structure enables our members to dedicate themselves entirely to the production of a high quality wash coffee, which is healthful for the consumer. We offer our customers a natural “typica” coffee which is certified organic by BIOLATINA and IMO CONTROL / NATURLAND.

Our coffee is produced solely by small-scale family farmers. The producers in our coffee region have always cultivated their coffee under shade and fruit trees, contributing an important part of the diet of the coffee families.

Typica Variety

In the Piura Region, coffee production began 100 years ago thanks to the introduction of the variety called “typica,” also known as “Creole Coffee.” This rustic variety is successful in the region thanks to its good adaption to the agro-climates conditions of the area. The agro-ecological characteristics of the ecosystem and the altitude of the region allow the production of quality coffee with good aroma. The soils contain generous amounts of sand with a wide variety of organic material, giving it a natural fertility, and the varied vegetation is highly favorable for the production of organic shade-grown coffee.
